What is Your Background Music?

What is your background music? IMG_4228

Headache, kids homework, rebellious teens, diabetic husband, laundry, what’s for dinner, didn’t sleep very well, a to-do list a mile long – is that your background music?

Or if you pop your head outside to smell the sunshine-dried sheets, to watch a squirrel scamper up the big oak out front, to revel in the colors of creation, before returning to work, refreshed. Does that change your background music?

Are you wondering how you will meet budget, worrying if the gas will last as you job hunt, losing the battle with your loved one’s illness, adding water and a few spices to stretch the dinner one more time, pacing through another sleepless night praying for your wanderer. Is that your background music?

Or does your baby’s cry bring a thankful smile for the blessing of a child, or a reminder that you have what the doctors said you would never have? Does a sideways hug from a friend who noticed you were feeling blue, or seeing please say no in your teen’s eyes as she asks you to say yes to a friend’s questionable request soften your background music, even though your circumstances have not changed?

Is there a counter melody – a Psalm, a song on a machine or in your mind, a running commentary with the Lord, a deep breath accepting His peace despite the daily challenges and turmoil? I hope that is your background music.  Music – and not defeating self-talk saying you will never, or, you always.

As you climb today’s hills and wipe the sweat off your brow, I pray you will stop and listen for your background music – even in your wilderness. Listen for the voice from the Lord:

Zeph. 3:17          Your GOD is present among you,

a strong Warrior there to save you.

Happy to have you back, he’ll calm you with his love

and delight you with his songs.

Ah, heaven’s background music! It makes me want to dance!IMG_3731

Can you hear it?
