Review – Dance With Jesus – From Grief to Grace by Susan B. Mead

Susan Mead shares her experiences of grief to grace as confirmation of her assurance of DancewJesus“the need to know that God is still alive and restoring his fragile sons and daughters today.”

Grief touches us all and in many different ways, and Susan candidly and sometimes humorously, shares several griefs and many graces through 22 mini-chapters of her life.

The chapters are brief (each only seven pages or less) because attention spans are usually shorter while we are enduring the stress of grief.

I expected the story of one particular loss of her life, but found grief – and grace – written across the years of Susan’s life experiences in several different forms. I got hooked on her story and read the entire book in a couple of hours – the first time.

Then I went back through each chapter, and re-read the scriptures at the beginning, and mentally answered the thought provoking question or questions at the end of each chapter. It was a rewarding read!

This little book is an excellent encourager, reminding me in the midst of my still-new grief, IMG_0015that this experience is one permanent part of my forever story. The questions and the scriptures lead the reader to embrace life as a whole, and to connect that we too have each had many griefs and multiple graces across our lifetime.

The title Dance with Jesus comes from a comforting gift of God’s grace to Susan that gave her peace about her son Kyle, and added a smile to her memories as well.  It reminded me of our David dancing at Kristin’s wedding too.

The chapter of her chat with her other son Matt after Kyle’s death, brought to mind several unsettling conversations with my own children – you know, the ones where the ‘kid’ becomes the parent and gives you such a simple child-like teaching that you know it came from God.

I believe Susan’s book will encourage many who are grieving – whatever the circumstance or loss – to also tell their story, and to recognize the grace that came despite, or even because of, the grief.
