Review- When Chicks Hatch by Heather Randall

Five fragile women face the most challenging days of their lives. Love, friendship, and long-held perceptions of what life holds for them are tested as each woman is confronted by her own personal struggles. Their lives become unavoidably intertwined as they intersect with God, faith, and hope.

Were that synopsis provided in an introduction, or the character’s name as a chapter header clued the reader to five separate stories, enjoyment would have come quicker. Once past the confusion of character hopping, I enjoyed the book and the 5-part story that wove together.

The author dealt gently but realistically with multiple sensitive topics including infidelity, child out of wedlock, adultery, surrogacy, parenting an adult child, marital commitment developing love, and loss of a child. I appreciated that all of the characters stories were told in a realistic manner, with no perfect people or perfect solutions. Consequently this life-intersecting story is more thought provoking than a stereotypical novella with several characters with intertwined lives.

If a troubled character does not show possibility or desire to change, I don’t care to finish the story and I appreciated how Randall reveals each woman’s imperfections in a manner that enables the reader to cheer for and hope for reconciliation of her issues.

I like to feel I have grown in some way from every book I read. Relatable and realistic life decisions and changes, particularly emotionally and spiritually drive this multi-layered story and those aha moments are skillfully woven into the characters’ story so the reader can learn with them. When Chicks Hatch is well written, entertaining and thought-provoking. The story would make an intriguing modern movie.
