Who I Am In Christ #25 – Safely Sheltered

Perhaps someone needed the message today and that’s why I accidentally skipped this blog?

 Under His Wings – Psalms 91:4

This is the verse that inspired my Mom’s memorial stone engraving “Safely home in the shelter of His wings.

King James:

He shall cover thee with his feathers,

and under his wings shalt thou trust:

his truth shall be thy shield and buckler (something surrounding the person)

New American Standard:

He will cover you with His pinions, (Wings that soar)

And under His wings you may seek refuge;

His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.

Shield: to rescue, to hand safely over (i.e. surrender)—deliver

Bulwark: strong argument – powerful like a paw – great, mighty

The Message – His huge outstretched arms protect you—

under them you’re perfectly safe;

his arms fend off all harm.

All three versions champion three thoughts on being safely sheltered:

1)   He covers me

2)   UNDER His outstretched reach I can find safety and refuge

3)   I can REST there because I know I am protected

Mom also often quoted the song Under His Wings

Under His wings I am safely abiding,
Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
Still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me,
He has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Refrain

Under His wings, under His wings,
Who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide,
Safely abide forever.

Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow!
How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing,
There I find comfort, and there I am blessed.

Refrain

Under His wings, oh, what precious enjoyment!
There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
Sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me,
Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore.

I, and our family, have experienced many terrible and difficult things but  God and His Word have faithfully held us up.  Someone asked after our grandson died, if my faith in God was gone now. I was blessed to answer that God is sovereign and had not changed and if not for the living Word and its assurance, I felt I would have gone mad with grief.

Whatever you are experiencing today, know this. As long as we are in the world we are subject to the world’s temporary trials.  Temporary.  But God IS there.  Like another song (by Babbie Mason) says,

…when you don’t understand
When don’t see his plan
When you can’t trace his hand
Trust His Heart
